This brother was shot just two-blocks up the street from where the young black folk were warring on each other, he died later that evening. ________________________________________ Opposing the "War on Drugs": Working to Change National Drug Policy There were a wide-range of organizations in attendance at the CBC Legislative Conference this past week that are dedicated to ending the so-called "War on Drugs," citing it as nothing more than a war on Black and poor people. Those organizations include police and prosecutors, as well as individuals who are simply opposed to the racist injustice of inflicted under U.S. drug policies and "criminal justice" initiatives such as mandatory minimums and "three-strikes" laws. One leading organization in this effort is Break the Chains, led by the fervent advocacy of attorney Deborah Peterson Small in New York. Break the Chains is currently asking the general public to sign and send letters to Barack Obama, calling on him to "initiate an open and honest dialogue regarding the future of U.S. drug policy." Break the Chains is one of many organizations seeking to end the use of drug prohibitions as the basis for the excessive focus on repressive policing and the punitive mass imprisonment of Black and poor people. (www.breakthechains.org) Surprisingly, there is a major sea-change going on in Mississippi, the new district attorney for Hinds County is not only Black, but is outspoken on the disparities caused by the so-called "War on Drugs" and the "War on Crime." Robert Shuler Smith is the first Black to serve as the Hinds County District Attorney and makes no bones about the lunacy and racism of current drug laws and the racist nature of the criminal justice system in general. There are also numerous police organizations calling for the de-criminalization of drugs, a leading spokesman for this group has been Ronald "Ron" Hampton (nbpanatofc@att.net), formerly of the National Black Police Association. There is the Citizens Opposing Prohibition (www.citizensopposingprohibition.org), a leading advocate of which is Howard "Cowboy" Woodridge, a former police detective and real cowboy from out of Texas. There are numerous other organizations working on changing both drug policy and the criminal justice system, all of whom are valuable sources for critical information and need public support. Some of these organizations are: Drug Policy Alliance (www.drugpolicy.org) Racial Justice Initiative (www.racialjusticeinitiative.org) the Sentencing Project (www.sentencingproject.org) Families Against Mandatory Minimums (www.famm.org) And numerous others, check them out. ______________________________________________________ Can Black People Expect Justice in America? Can a Chicken Produce a Duck Egg? Imagine what it is like to live in a society in which you have no rights, in which your life, liberty, and property can be taken at a whim by those who "hold the power and the government," "You’ll see terrorism that will terrify you, and if you don’t think you’ll see it, you’re trying to blind yourself to the historic development of everything that’s taking place on this earth today. You’ll see other things. Why will you see them? Because as soon as people realize that it’s impossible for a chicken to produce a duck egg even though they both belong to the same family of fowl--a chicken just doesn’t have within its system to produce a duck egg. It can’t do it. It can only produce according to what that particular system was constructed to produce. The system in this country cannot produce freedom for an Afro-American. It is impossible for this system, this economic system, this political system, this social system, this system, period. It’s impossible for this system as it stands to produce freedom right now for the Black man in this country. And if ever a chicken did produce a duck egg, I’m certain you would say it was certainly a revolutionary chicken! " Malcolm X March 29, 1964, New York |
